The Asian Supercar Challenge was established in 2003 by the Supercar Club of Hong Kong (SCCHK). At the beginning of 2008, SCCHK and Motorsport Asia Limited reached an agreement to jointly organize the Asia Supercar Challenge.

In 2009, the series eveolved to become the GT3 Asia Challenge and was held as part of the Asian Festival of Speed, competing across Asia. The season culminated in the prestigious street circuit of the 56th Macau Grand Prix.

The 2011 season saw another evolution of the Championship, combining GT3 Asia with the GT4 Asia Cup to form a brand new and even more competitive Championship - GT Asia.
